A note from a fan of the old and new BSG.
I was serving on active duty when the new BSG aired. I loved the 79 BSG and was looking forward to its reemergence. Unfortunately I got caught up in the blogosphere rancor and went into the miniseries with a bit of trepidation. I loved it. During the series I could only watch episodes catcher catch can and missed a lot. Got to watch (33) and (Water) of season one but deployed again returning home at the start of season three with the episodes on New Caprica (Occupation). Fresh from Iraq the allegory of resistance, freedom fighter or terrorist in (Occupation) turned me off and disappointed me. Viewing this out of context and not prepared to challenge myself just moments after removing my own body armor I reacted to this story as another anti war/ anti military hack job and tuned out of the show in anger but decided to give it a chance (for a lot of reasons including love of the story and genre) a couple of episodes later for (Hero). Needless to say the theme summed up by [blaming the Colonial Fleet Admiralty for provoking a war they wanted] was the last straw for me so I gave up. Deploying again I returned home at the end of season four in time to see the first part of the finally. To me it seemed so disjointed and because I missed so much and I was so out of context with the story that I did not watch the last two hours.
Now retired from the Navy and two years from the end of the series and listening to friends who praise the show and receiving as a gift and reading BSG and Philosophy I knew I had to watch the series in its entirety.
I just spent the last month watching the story (moving from internet to buying my own Blu-ray box set at (You can’t go Home Again)) from the Miniseries to the unaired extended finally. Wow! What a powerful human story. I found myself totally emotionally invested in the story and the characters. It is by far one of the best most entertaining most thoughtful and powerful human dramas ever presented.
I want to thank Ron Moore, David Eick, and the entire ensemble of people in front of and behind the camera. Thank you for challenging, testing, and entertaining your audience. I also need to add a special thank you to Richard Hatch for carrying the spark and keeping the story alive between productions. It took real strength to fight for so long and then to embrace as you did -another’s vision.
I look forward to viewing The Plan and Caprica in preparation for Blood and Chrome. This time I will be in and stay in from the start. And I hope the site will be a good forum for fans of the BSG canon for all fans of BSG. Good Hunting.
