Sometime during the Fall of the Twelve Colonies the Cylons attack the Scorpion Fleet Shipyards. They launch several nuclear weapons and utilize numerous Raider squadrons in the attack. Five Colonial Fleet ships, including two battlestars, are destroyed at the onset of the struggle.
Pegasus is docked at the shipyards when the attack occurs, having been scheduled to undergo a three month systems overhaul. With all of its computer networks taken off-line in preparation for the refit, the battlestar is largely unaffected by Cylon infiltration of the Command Navigation Program; only the defense grid and navigational computer are compromised.
While trapped in its dock Pegasus is struck by multiple Cylon batteries. The accrued damage is severe enough to initiate an explosion of fuel and ordnance on the hangar decks, causing over 700 casualties. Subsequently, Cain orders the forward thrusters to be fired, and the ship manages to tear itself free from the burning shipyard.
With no defensive options, and destruction imminent, Admiral Cain orders the CIC crew to activate the FTL system and engage in a blind jump: "Wherever. Anywhere. Just jump", Cain recalls to Commander Adama and President Laura Roslin in a conversation shortly after Galactica encounters her battlestar months later. The blind jump is successful in that Pegasus escapes both the Cylon attack and the chance of collision with a celestial body. Additionally, Pegasus's escape is aided by an electro-magnetic pulse that blinds the Cylon DRADIS and makes them oblivious to the battlestar's survival ("Pegasus", "Razor").
Notes
- The electro-magnetic pulse mentioned in the article is not a true EMP. See the EMP article for further details.
- One of the destroyed battlestars is of Galactica's type. Two others appear to be of the same or a similar design as Valkyrie.

- In "Pegasus", Cain says "Five ships, two of them battlestars, they were destroyed right there."
- In "Razor" two battlestars can be clearly seen in the establishing shot of the shipyard, and two ships that appear to be of Valkyrie's design are destroyed later. This makes at least four, which makes it likely that Cain's comment refers not to the total number of ships present, but the ones destroyed in the opening salvos of the battle.
- It is unknown whether the large vessel above Pegasus is a designated as a battlestar by the Colonial Fleet.
